What Is Standard Style vs. American Smooth?
Many dancers — even experienced ones — ask: what’s the difference between Standard and Smooth style?
When comparing these two ballroom dance styles, several aspects set them apart, including technique, form, rhythm, and the unique patterns used in each.
Standard Style (International Standard)
Dances Included: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep
Hold: Partners remain in a closed hold throughout the entire dance
Focus: Emphasizes technique, posture, and frame, with strong ballet influence in body alignment and movement quality
Style: Known for elegant, flowing motion and classic competitive styling
Signature Dance: The Slow Waltz, with its smooth “rise and fall” created through coordinated knee and foot action
Movement Pattern: Danced in a counter-clockwise direction around a rectangular floor, following the line of dance

American Smooth Style
Dances Included: Waltz, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and American Smooth Tango
Hold: Incorporates both closed and open positions, allowing for more expressive and dynamic movement
Focus: Blends traditional ballroom technique with creative freedom, emphasizing fluidity, open shapes, and performance
Style: Known for its expressive, theatrical quality, with opportunities for personalized styling and dramatic lines
Signature Dance: American Smooth Tango, combining the drama of tango with the freedom of open work and sweeping motion
Performance: Ideal for both social dancers and competitors, with opportunities to perform in classes, showcases, and events

Standard Style & American Smooth FAQ
Is American Smooth easier than Standard?
They’re different — not necessarily easier or harder. Smooth allows more freedom and interpretation, while Standard demands strict technique and frame control.
Can I learn both styles at once?
Yes! Many students do. We offer lessons that focus on similarities and transitions between them.
Do I need a partner to start ballroom dancing?
No. Our instructors partner with students in private lessons. Group classes rotate partners, so solos are always welcome.
Can I perform or compete in these styles?
Absolutely. We coach for showcases, medal tests, and competitions across Smooth and Standard divisions.
